Martin’s Story: Regaining Independence After Stroke
In June 2023, I suffered a stroke that changed my life overnight. After spending eight weeks in hospital, I was discharged home under the care of the community stroke team. At that point, I faced significant challenges in my daily life. I was unable to walk even with a stick, struggled with dressing, couldn’t manage stairs independently, and had no use of my left arm. My overall mobility was extremely limited.
Despite the support from the community stroke team, which was excellent, their care was only available for six weeks after discharge. I knew I didn’t want my recovery to stop there. I was determined not to let the stroke define my future—I wanted to regain my independence and return to work in the IT industry.
Continuing physiotherapy at home proved to be a turning point. The transition from the community team was seamless, as the therapy built directly on the exercises I had already started. Even with building work happening at home, the sessions adapted around my environment, ensuring my progress was never disrupted.
Access to the clinic at the University of Birmingham was another major milestone in my recovery. Combining clinic-based rehabilitation with home physiotherapy significantly accelerated my progress. This flexible, responsive approach made a profound difference, allowing therapy to evolve alongside my recovery.
The improvements have been remarkable. I can now walk confidently around my home without assistance, use the stairs independently, and carry out everyday tasks. While my left arm is still weaker, I’ve adapted and regained functional independence in many areas. Most importantly, I’ve successfully returned to work.
A key factor in this journey has been the consistency and quality of care. My physiotherapist, Iain, had already been involved in my care during my hospital stay, which made the transition into ongoing rehabilitation seamless. His professionalism, attention to detail, and tailored approach made every session purposeful and motivating—even when the process was challenging.
From my wife’s perspective, the changes have been just as significant. She has seen me regain confidence and independence—walking around the house without a stick, making my own drinks, showering independently, and managing most daily tasks myself. While she still supports me with some activities, the progress has been life-changing for both of us.
IAB Health’s expertise, compassion, and commitment have played a crucial role in my recovery. Their personalised approach and dedication to patient outcomes have helped me rebuild my life after stroke.
