Patient Story: Paul's Journey – From Hoist Transfers to Walking Again
At IAB Neuro Rehab, we are privileged to work alongside some truly inspiring individuals, and Paul is certainly one of them.
Over the past year, Paul has demonstrated an incredible fighting spirit, unwavering determination, and a commitment to rehabilitation that has been nothing short of remarkable. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful recovery can continue long after discharge from hospital and inpatient rehabilitation services.
When Paul first began working with our team, he presented with a highly complex neurological picture. He was experiencing significant postural control difficulties, profound balance impairments, complete sensory loss throughout his right upper and lower limb, visual deficits, and substantial deconditioning following a prolonged period of reduced mobility.
At that stage, Paul relied entirely on a mobile hoist (Molift) for all transfers. Standing and walking were simply not possible, and everyday activities required a high level of assistance. His presentation represented one of the most challenging rehabilitation journeys we have encountered.
Despite these challenges, Paul arrived at every session with determination, resilience, and a willingness to work hard. Week after week, he committed himself fully to the rehabilitation process. Progress was not always easy, but his consistency never wavered.
Through a combination of specialist neurological physiotherapy, task-specific rehabilitation, strength and conditioning principles, balance retraining, postural control work, and functional practice, Paul gradually began to rebuild his abilities.
Over time, we started to see significant improvements.
The first milestones were small but meaningful. Improved sitting balance. Better trunk control. Increased tolerance to activity. Greater confidence in movement. As these foundations developed, Paul was able to progress further and further.
Today, Paul has reached a stage that once seemed a distant goal. He can now complete sit-to-stand transfers and walk across his lounge with only minimal assistance from one person.
For somebody who previously required a hoist for all transfers, this represents an extraordinary achievement.
Paul himself is often the first person to acknowledge the progress he has made. Having experienced both inpatient neurological rehabilitation and community services, he openly states that he has made more progress during his time with the IAB Neuro Rehab team than during any of his previous inpatient rehabilitation admissions.
His journey highlights something we strongly believe at IAB Neuro Rehab: discharge from hospital does not mean recovery has finished. High-quality, specialist neurological rehabilitation delivered consistently over time can continue to unlock improvements that many people are told may not be possible.
Alongside his home-based rehabilitation, Paul has also benefited from attending sessions at the IAB Neuro Rehab Clinic based within the University of Birmingham MoveWell Clinic. The clinic environment has allowed us to further progress his rehabilitation and challenge him in ways that support his ongoing recovery goals.
Of course, no rehabilitation journey happens in isolation. Paul has been fortunate to have incredible support from his partner, Carolynne, who has been by his side throughout every challenge, setback, and success. Together they have formed an outstanding team, and their commitment to the rehabilitation process has undoubtedly played a major role in the progress achieved.
We genuinely love working with Paul. He is a fantastic character, brings humour and positivity to every session, and continually reminds us why we do what we do.
His story is one of resilience, perseverance, teamwork, and hope.
We are incredibly proud of everything Paul has achieved so far and are excited to continue supporting him as he works towards the next stage of his rehabilitation journey.
Well done, Paul. Your determination inspires us all.
