Raj’s Story: Regaining Independence After Stroke

Life Before Physiotherapy

Following my stroke, I experienced significant challenges with balance, coordination, and even setting simple goals. Everyday tasks became difficult and often overwhelming.

Standing up from the sofa required a lot of effort and usually help from my wife. Climbing stairs felt unsafe, and walking short distances around the house—like going to the kitchen or bathroom—was tiring and unsteady. I often waited until someone was nearby before attempting to move.

These limitations had a big impact on my independence and confidence at home.

Why I Chose Neurological Physiotherapy

I decided to start home neurological physiotherapy because I wanted to regain my independence—not just at home, but also when out and about. I wanted to feel confident travelling again and managing daily life without relying heavily on others.

After doing my research, it was clear that Iain was a highly skilled neurological physiotherapist, which gave me confidence that I was making the right choice.

The Benefits of Home Physiotherapy

Having physiotherapy at home worked incredibly well for me.

I didn’t need to rely on anyone for transport, which had been difficult since my stroke, and I felt far less fatigued at the start of each session. This meant I could fully focus and get the most out of the treatment.

What really stood out was how personalised everything was. We worked on real-life situations within my home environment—getting up from the sofa, using the stairs, and moving safely around the house. Practising these tasks in my own space made a huge difference.

The Progress I’ve Made

Since starting therapy, I’ve seen a significant improvement in both my physical ability and confidence.

  • I can now go up and down the stairs independently

  • I no longer rely on a Zimmer frame around the house

  • On good days, I can walk unaided

  • On more difficult days, I use a stick for support

Coming home from hospital in a wheelchair and progressing to walking independently is something I’m incredibly proud of. This progress is a testament to Iain’s expertise—his deep understanding of neurological conditions and his ability to tailor each session to my needs made all the difference.

What Made the Biggest Difference

The biggest impact came from Iain’s approach and attitude.

He was always punctual and communicated clearly if running slightly late, which built trust and consistency. Every session was positive—he was friendly, approachable, and genuinely encouraging.

He provided clear, constructive feedback that helped me understand my progress and what I needed to improve. After such a life-changing event, my motivation was low, but Iain helped rebuild it through encouragement, structure, and positive reinforcement.

He also involved my wife throughout the process, which made a huge difference to both of us.

A Wife’s Perspective

From my wife’s perspective, the transformation has been incredible.

It’s been amazing to see how far I’ve come. I’ve always been motivated, but even more so knowing I had regular sessions to work towards. Iain has a real ability to keep that motivation going, even during more challenging weeks.

There are clear improvements in my mobility and independence, and it’s reassuring to know I am much safer moving around the house, especially on stairs.

Daily life has become easier for both of us—there’s less worry about falls and much more confidence in what I can do independently.

We truly believe that without Iain’s support, I wouldn’t be where I am today, and we are incredibly grateful.

Would I Recommend This Service?

I would 1000% recommend this home neurological physiotherapy service to anyone recovering from a stroke.

The impact has been life-changing—not just physically, but emotionally as well.

Iain has been professional, reliable, and genuinely caring from day one. His personalised approach, combined with his knowledge and consistent encouragement, has helped me achieve things that once felt impossible.

Tasks like climbing stairs and moving safely around the house are now manageable—and often independent.

From both my perspective and my wife’s, the improvement in safety, confidence, and overall quality of life has been huge.

We truly believe that without Iain’s dedication and support, this level of progress wouldn’t have been possible.

Iain—you are amazing. Don’t change, and keep doing what you do best.
