Roger’s Story: Determination, Recovery, and Regaining Life After Stroke
Roger’s life changed dramatically following a stroke caused by a brain bleed, which left the entire right side of his body paralysed—affecting his face, arm, and leg. Early on, the prognosis was uncertain, with consultants advising there was only a 50% chance of recovery.
After several days in an acute stroke unit, Roger was transferred to a rehabilitation ward, where he spent four months undergoing intensive therapy, including physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Despite this, progress was initially very limited—he required hoisting for transfers and had no movement or sensation in his right side.
Upon returning home, Roger required significant support. Carers visited four times a day, and he received a short period of NHS physiotherapy. However, Roger’s determination to improve never wavered. Knowing that his recovery needed to continue beyond this, he made the decision to pursue specialist neurological physiotherapy at home.
Home-based treatment proved to be the ideal solution. It allowed Roger to access consistent, high-quality rehabilitation in a familiar and comfortable environment, without the logistical challenges of hospital transport.
Having previously worked on stroke units, Iain brought a deep understanding of Roger’s condition from the outset. This meant therapy could begin immediately at the right level, with a clear focus on functional recovery.
Through a structured and intensive rehabilitation programme, Roger began to make significant progress. His balance and core strength improved, enabling him to stand independently. He regained the ability to perform functional movements such as transferring between bed and chair, walking short distances with support, and using a quad stick to aid mobility. He has even progressed to stepping into a car—an important milestone that has restored a level of independence and freedom.
Roger’s physical improvements have been remarkable. Despite ongoing sensory loss in his leg, he has regained strength and control, supported by regular exercise, including the use of a motorised bike and hydrotherapy sessions. His leg strength is now comparable to, if not better than, before his stroke.
Beyond the physical gains, the impact on Roger’s quality of life has been profound. Being able to get into a car has reopened opportunities to socialise, go out for meals, and even enjoy holidays with his family. It has also provided reassurance for his wife, allowing her to take breaks knowing Roger continues to receive consistent care—even during respite stays, where Iain has continued his treatment.
Roger’s journey has also been shared with his grandchildren, who have been able to witness his recovery firsthand. This has been an important part of maintaining family connection and helping them understand his progress.
A defining feature of Roger’s recovery has been Iain’s commitment and approach. His expertise in neurological physiotherapy, combined with genuine passion and dedication, has supported not only Roger’s physical rehabilitation but also his mental resilience and confidence.
Looking back on the early stages of his stroke, Roger recognises just how far he has come—and remains confident that further progress is still to come.
Roger and his family are deeply grateful for the care and support they have received and would strongly recommend Iain to anyone in need of specialist neurological physiotherapy.
